Sugar free tomato sauce recipe

Make your own in less than 10 minutes

It is now week 2 of Sugar-free September! As requested by one of the challengers doing Sugar-free September with Naturopath Tekla Diedrichsen and myself this year – here is my take on sugar-free tomato sauce (also frequently called ‘nomato’).

Store-bought tomato sauces are shocking for needless hidden sugars!

Check out this popular Australian brand… 9% of your recommended daily sugar intake, in A SINGLE SERVE OF TOMATO SAUCE? The serving size is small too – ever had one of those squeeze sauce packets? One of those is a single 14g serving of which 8g is sugars.

No wonder we all struggled so much with weight, sugar cravings, diabetes, lethargy, exhaustion and headaches!

Make your own healthy, sugar free tomato sauce

I know, I know. You’ve got a bazillion other things to do that come before making your own tomato sauce. I understand, its just one more complication to add into your life. My response; you can either stand in the supermarket for hours pouring over nutrition labels trying to find the healthiest sauce available there, or you can use ingredients you probably already have in your pantry to make your own at a fraction of the cost and in less than 10 minutes.

Get organised and productive in the kitchen and make your sauce while cooking dinner – you’re already in there anyway, so why not make the most of that time?

Prep Time2 minsCook Time5 minsCategory, , ,

Ingredients:

400 g Tin of salt reduced, organic diced tomatoes
 ½ Brown onion, chopped
 1 tbsp Paprika
 ½ tsp Ground nutmeg
 1 Garlic clove, crushed (optional)
 salt/pepper to taste

Instructions:

1

There are 2 steps to this; heating the ingredients in a saucepan and ‘zooshing’ them all together. Which order you do them in depends upon your device and time preferences;

1: With a NutriBullet or smoothie maker
2

If you are using a NutriBullet, or ‘smoothie’ maker (a fully enclosed cup), zoosh your ingredients FIRST. This way you'll save time waiting around for the sauce to cool before you can zoosh it.

This is what I do – it means less time in the kitchen and it also means you can monitor the rate of evaporation better, so the sauce is thick and not watery.

3

If you have a blender, Thermomix, or other device that has a lid or ventilation hole so hot air can escape, you can do this traditionally, bringing all ingredients to boil in a sauce pan first, and then zooshing afterwards.

NOTES
4

Since there is no preservatives in this recipe, split your batch in two and freeze half for later. It will last up to 2 weeks in the fridge, just keep an eye on it if you don’t use it often.
